چکیده

Finite mixtures of skew distributions provide a flexible tool for modelling heterogeneous data with asymmetric distributional features. However, parameter estimation via the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm can become very timeconsuming due to the complicated expressions involved in the E-step that are numerically expensive to evaluate. A more time-efficient implementation of the EM algorithm was recently proposed which allows each component of the mixture model to be evaluated in parallel. In this paper, we develop a block implementation of the EM algorithm that facilitates the calculations in the Eand M-steps to be spread across a larger number of threads. We focus on the fitting of finite mixtures of multivariate skew normal and skew t-distributions, and show that both the Eand M-steps in the EM algorithm can be modified to allow the data to be split into blocks. The approach can be easily implemented for use by multicore and multiprocessor machines. It can also be applied concurrently with the recently proposed multithreaded EM algorithm to achieve further reduction in computation time. The improvement in time performance is illustrated on some real datasets.

The Family of Scale-Mixture of Skew-Normal Distributions and Its Application in Bayesian Nonlinear Regression Models

In previous studies on fitting non-linear regression models with the symmetric structure the normality is usually assumed in the analysis of data. This choice may be inappropriate when the distribution of residual terms is asymmetric. Recently, the family of scale-mixture of skew-normal distributions is the main concern of many researchers. This family includes several skewed and heavy-tailed d...

Determination of the number of components in finite mixture distribution with Skew-t-Normal components

Abstract One of the main goal in the mixture distributions is to determine the number of components. There are different methods for determination the number of components, for example, Greedy-EM algorithm which is based on adding a new component to the model until satisfied the best number of components. The second method is based on maximum entropy and finally the third method is based on non...

Rejoinder to the discussion of "Model-based clustering and classification with non-normal mixture distributions"

Non-normal mixture distributions have received increasing attention in recent years. Finite mixtures of multivariate skew-symmetric distributions, in particular, the skew normal and skew t-mixture models, are emerging as promising extensions to the traditional normal and t-mixture models. Most of these parametric families of skew distributions are closely related, and can be classified into fou...

A Family of Skew-Slash Distributions and Estimation of its Parameters via an EM Algorithm

Abstract. In this paper, a family of skew-slash distributions is defined and investigated. We define the new family by the scale mixture of a skew-elliptically distributed random variable with the power of a uniform random variable. This family of distributions contains slash-elliptical and skew-slash distributions. We obtain the moments and some distributional properties of the new family of d...

An Extension of the Birnbaum-Saunders Distribution Based on Skew-Normal t Distribution

In this paper, we introducte a family of univariate Birnbaum-Saunders distributions arising from the skew-normal-t  distribution. We obtain several properties of this distribution such as its moments, the maximum likelihood estimation procedure via an EM-algorithm and a method to evaluate standard errors using the EM-algorithm. Finally, we apply these methods to a real data set to demonstr...
